MOTHERS DAY

The origin of mothers day can be traced to a pagan celebration to honor the ancient Greeks, mother of the gods, Rhea. This celebration was held in the spring.

As time progressed several persons suggested a special day for mothers but it finally took hold when Anna Jarvis suggested a celebration in honor of her own mother at a church in West Virginia.

Jarvis expressed a regret in her later years for having suggested the idea because it had taken on such a commercial effect within the USA.

This would in no way seem to me to be a problem with setting aside a special day to honor mothers but the sentiment does fall lacking with profit.

Of course we should honor our parents on all days and not just a special day. This may be hard to do, and very often not done, but that doesn't demean the rightness of doing it.

Exodus 20:12  ¶Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
Deuteronomy 5:16  Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

As for how my own day will be spent. We are planning to go to a early church service, and then meet my son and wife for lunch at Applebees.

My son is always a lot better at honoring his mother on this day than I ever was my own.
